Maya is a NM Hall of Fame Coach
As the Mayfield High School girls’ basketball coach looks at a major career milestone, the Trojan community invites the Las Cruces community to be a part of great things that are happening on campus.
The Trojans invite family, friends and the Las Cruces community to join them on Thursday, Feb. 6 at 7 p.m. for Pink Night and First New Mexico Bank Night at Mayfield High School. First New Mexico Bank recently donated funding, approved by the Las Cruces Public Schools Board of Education, that will provide a state-of-the-art video board for the MHS gymnasium.
Thursday night could also be a career highlight for MHS girls’ basketball coach George Maya, who is closing in on 600 career victories. After defeating Alamogordo on Monday, Jan. 27, he has 597 wins under his belt. Maya has been with MHS for over 30 years and was named a New Mexico Hall of Fame Coach by the New Mexico High School Coaches Association and in 2019 was named Coach of the Year by the National Federation of State High School Associations.
“We are planning a spectacular celebration on ‘Pink Night’, and we hope Las Cruces comes out to join in on the fun,” said Eric Fraass, MHS Principal. “We would also like to extend a big Trojan thank-you to First New Mexico Bank for the amazing donation of the new video board. We are grateful for community leaders like First New Mexico Bank, Las Cruces who see that our students are the future.”
Senior Night at Mayfield is Feb. 20, 2025, to honor the outgoing seniors. That same night, the school will also be making a huge announcement about some upcoming items that community members and Trojan fans will not want to miss.
“The staff and administrators at Mayfield High School are working hard to continue to do great things for the students and athletes and we invite everyone to join in on honoring the students and coaches,” Fraass said.
