Everything You Need to Know About the New Voter Registration Process at the MVD
As of July 1, 2025, Automatic Voter Registration (AVR) is active in New Mexico. This new process is designed to make voter registration more seamless for eligible residents. Under the law, customers at the Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) who are eligible to vote are now automatically registered when they apply for or renew a driver’s license or state ID—unless they choose to decline.
“Automatic Voter Registration is another powerful step toward building an election system that is both accessible and secure. In Doña Ana County, we believe that strengthening trust in our democracy starts with making it easier—and safer—for every eligible voter to participate.”
— Amanda López Askin, Ph.D., Doña Ana County Clerk
What’s Changed?
Previously, MVD customers were offered the option to register to vote during appointments. Now, if you are:
- A U.S. citizen
- A New Mexico resident
- 18 years or older
…you are automatically registered.
Prefer not to be registered? You can opt out by checking the box on your voter information card (sent by mail) and returning it using the prepaid envelope.
What Happens Next?
After visiting the MVD, you’ll receive a notice from your County Clerk with:
- Confirmation of your voter registration
- Information on how to request a mail-in ballot
- Options to update your political party
- Instructions to opt out if you don’t wish to be registered
Important: If you don’t return the notice, your voter registration remains active.
Common Questions
Do I have to vote?
No—being registered gives you the option to vote, but you’re never required to.
Will I be called for jury duty?
Possibly. Jury pools are drawn from multiple sources, including driver’s license and ID records—not just voter rolls.
Can I update my party or registration info?
Yes! You can return the AVR notice with your changes or contact your County Clerk’s Office to update your information. You can also update online at nmvote.org
Do I have to choose a party?
No. You can register as Decline to State (DTS) or No Party Affiliation and still vote in primary elections under New Mexico law.
